CiviCRM is an open source, web-based customer relationship management (CRM) software designed primarily for not-for-profit and civic sector organizations. It is developed and maintained by a dedicated Core Team of seven individuals, supported by a global community of tens of thousands of contributors, including service providers, independent developers, nonprofit consultants, and end users. The software offers a comprehensive set of features out of the box and integrates seamlessly with organizational websites. CiviCRM’s vision is to provide all organizations, regardless of size, budget, or mission, with access to an exceptional CRM that helps them engage contacts and fulfill their missions. This vision is pursued through a strategic roadmap and a focus on sustainable growth, especially via CiviCRM Spark—a lightweight, web-based, scalable, and secure SaaS version tailored for nonprofits seeking an easy-to-use CRM without technical burden. Spark serves as an onboarding platform and continues to expand with support from community partners. As an independent, self-funded project under CiviCRM LLC (a California-based limited liability company), CiviCRM relies heavily on financial support from generous donors, partner programs, and membership contributions, alongside active community coding and development efforts. Despite strong community involvement, funding and core team capacity present ongoing challenges, occasionally leading to inconsistencies and pauses in development work. CiviCRM maintains transparency through regular monthly reports tracking project health, development progress, and financial status. The platform’s ecosystem thrives on collaborative events such as CiviCamps and online webinars, which aid in raising awareness and generating funds. The project emphasizes sustainability by balancing product development with operational maintenance to avoid stagnation while managing budget shortfalls. Overall, CiviCRM is a powerful, flexible, and highly customizable CRM platform driven by a vibrant community committed to advancing nonprofit and civic causes worldwide. It aims to remain independent and community-owned, fostering an inclusive environment where organizations can freely adapt, expand, and optimize their engagement capabilities.
